USVI Travel Guide - Things to do in the USVI

Travel Guide: Where to go in the USVI

When it comes to a vacation in the Caribbean islands there are a lot of options when it comes to where to go and what to do. There is enough variation to suit the needs of most travelers to ensure that they have a great stay when they visit the islands.

The USVI consists of three main islands which are Saint Croix, Saint John, and Saint Thomas. Alongside these three main tourist destinations there are fifty other minor islands and cays. Alongside the U.S Virgin Islands you also have the British Virgin Islands (BVI) that feature a number of other islands and destinations, along with being the main home to BVI Chillout Charters! In this guide we’ll focus on the USVI and highlight some of the great things you can do and see on the main islands.

Things to See and Do on Saint Croix

Saint Croix is the largest island in the USVI and has a nick name of Twin City. This is due to its two main towns located on the island, Frederiksted and Christiansted. Those familiar with Scandinavian names might notice the Danish influences in the names of these two towns, and this is because the island was once purchased by the Danish West India Company in 1733. In total the island remained under Danish rule for around two hundred years. In fact, Saint Croix has a varied history since it changed hands numerous times before finally ending up as a part of the United States in 1927.

Today Saint Croix offers a visitor a wide range of things to do and see and is well worth a visit if you’re in the USVI on vacation.

Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve

This preserve in St. Croix is located five miles from the Christiansted National Historic Site. The park offers a wide range of things to do from scuba diving, snorkeling, and kayaking for those who enjoy water sports, along with an impressive range of hiking tours for those who like to keep their feet dry. The preserve also features a number of archaeological sites and ruins covering the prehistoric and colonial-era.

The park is accessible by car - so you may want to look for an organized tour or hire a car to get there.

Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge

Located quite close to Frederiksted Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge is well known for its great waters and sandy beaches. As the name suggests it is a wildlife refuge where you will find wildlife, namely endangered leatherback sea turtles which come there to nest on the beautiful beaches in the area.

In fact, this is the refuge’s main purpose - to protect the sea turtles. The park is closed when nesting season is underway to stop the turtles being disturbed. The beach is closed to the public from around mid-April to August annually. However, guided, educational observation trips is potentially possible.

Visitors to Point Udall will also get some stunning panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea which will look great on your Instagram feed.

This is an excellent location to visit for those who do not mind a challenging hike. Those that do make the walk are rewarded with a series of large, pools that they can take a dip in so bring your swimming costume. The walk itself will take you through a forest where you can see a range of animals and insects.

As mentioned, the hike to the tide pools is quite challenging and safety at the tide pools is also an important consideration. This hike is best undertaken in the morning (also the busiest time) so that you have plenty of time to get back to the start of the trail before sunset. It is not lit so you do not want to have to walk the forest in the dark.

One great option is to take a guided tour - as this will be the safest option and potentially the most rewarding experience. Annaly Bay Tide Pools are found on St. Croix’s North Shore.

Hamilton Jackson Park - which is another terrific place to visit. At this location you will find a range of 18th century and 19th century structures.

Even though Water Island is a separate island - we’re including it in this guide to St Thomas since it is commonly accessed via this main island. Honeymoon Beach is both a beautiful and popular location with visitors to the USVI

This beach is also where you can get to see the leaning palm trees that the island was once incredibly famous for - prior to the devastation caused by two hurricanes back in 2017. So, if you want that photo-opportunity then this is the place to take a trip to. To get there you will need to either walk the Lind Point Trail or travel by a boat to arrive on the shore itself.

Want another great beach with amazing views and snorkelling? Try Maho Bay Beach. It is popular with locals and tourists alike.

Cruz Bay

Alongside all the great hiking trails and amazing beaches in the local area we can also recommend a trip to the town of Cruz Bay - where you will find a plethora of shops, boutiques, restaurants, and bars. Great for a day trip and nightlife.

If you are traveling from another island, it is possible that Cruz Bay will be your primary landing point. We could write an entirely separate guide to this town as it is jam packed with things to do - but we are highlighting it because it is a great excursion alongside the rest of the nature that makes up much of the island of St. John.

Lime Out VI

This is a floating taco stand in Coral Bay - which is only accessible from the water.

If you like Mexican inspired food then the Lime Out VI Taco Boat is popular, well known and a great destination for some excellent food and cocktails. Since it is floating - any visit to Lime Out IV is going to be a memorable one.

One way to get there is via a charter boat. If you’re looking to do a charter boat tour around the islands, some tours will do a pit stop at the floating taco stand so you can experience the food for yourself. The food itself is well regarded, so if tacos are your thing - and you want to take a charter tour - then you can combine the two.

The garden itself is around two acres in size and is a wonderful way to spend a spare hour. You’ll also get some magnificent views of Magens Bay, Tortola, and St. John

Blackbeard’s Castle

Blackbeard’s Castle is one of the five National Historical landmarks that are in the Virgin Islands. Of course - whether Blackbeard ever used this tower as an actual lookout is one for debate. The tower was initially built by the Danish as a lookout tower and was originally called Skytsborg.

The tower itself is in the city of Charlotte Amalie. This location used to offer visits and walking tours but since the hurricane in 2017 has been closed to the public. It is due to reopen again but as of 2022 remains closed. So, this might be one to check up on prior to any visit to avoid disappointment.

Close by to Blackbeard’s Castle is another famous St Thomas landmark - the 99 steps, which is in fact 103 steps. It’s a great landmark and you’ll get to see a lot of the local architecture, pretty foliage, and also get good views – along with the bragging rights that you made it all the way to the top.
