Located in the heart of the British Virgin Islands (BVI), Peter Island is a world-class private island resort and one of the Caribbean’s most luxurious destinations. Known as the largest private island in the BVI, Peter Island offers the ultimate getaway. Just a short power boat ride from Tortola and Road Town, the island is surrounded by the beautiful waters of the Caribbean Sea and offers amazing ocean views.
The highlight of the island is The Peter Island Resort, Spa & Marina, owned by the Van Andel family. Although Peter Island Resort closed after hurricane Irma, it has now reopened after years of extensive rebuilding and upgrades.
After the reopening of Peter Island Resort, the standard of luxury was improved yet further. Guests can book junior suites and beachside rooms to large bedroom villas, including the iconic Hawk’s Nest, and the Falcon’s Nest, with 22,000 square-foot of space. Oceanfront terraces overlook the island’s white-sand beaches, providing maximum opportunities to relax.
The resort has amazing on-site facilities such as beachfront accommodation. After check-in guests can relax by the swimming pool, unwind in the hot tub, get complimentary WiFi, fitness center, and leverage the concierge team to help with any needs. Watersports is another popular option with visitors. As a side note, one thing that travelers should know about the BVI is that USD is the main currency and not British pounds. You’ll also find spa treatment rooms for those who like to be pampered.
Guests can enjoy the resort’s beautiful beaches, with perhaps the best one being Deadman’s Beach. Despite having quite an unsettling name, it is a one-mile crescent curved beach with white powdery sands, swaying palm trees, and pristine tropical waters to enjoy.
Immerse yourself in the scenery and tranquility that Peter Island has to offer with “Deadman’s Beach” being listed as one of the world’s top 10 beaches to visit. For those who enjoy water sports, Deadman’s Bay, is perfect for these and snorkeling.
Have you ever heard of the saying “Yo ho-ho and a bottle of rum”? This phrase originated from the pirate tales that surround Peter Island, as this too was another pirate hot spot back in the 18th century!
The reason why the beach was named “Deadman’s Beach” is due to the adjacent island located nearby known as “Deadman’s Chest”. Legend tells us that this island is where the infamous pirate “Blackbeard” left fifteen of his crew stranded after a mutiny. He left them here with only a case of rum and sword. Those that didn’t survive washed up onto Peter Island’s Deadman’s Beach.
Other areas on Peter include White Bay, a beautiful, quiet stretch of sand, which is an ideal destination for relaxing in the sun. In addition to this, Sprat Bay is home to the yacht club and marina. For some great food with can recommend The Drake Steakhouse, which serves premium cuts of beef and fresh seafood.
Peter Island also serves as the perfect jumping-off point for exploring nearby charter destinations like Norman Island and Virgin Gorda, both just a short boat ride away.
